The background:

For one of the largest college fairs in the U.S., the uni-

versity decided to pull out all the stops and make its booth

the one that generated the most traffic and, it hoped, the

most leads for its mail, phone, and e-mail lists.

Its admissions office called on Black Box to help set up

multimedia kiosks that would grab the interest of prospec-

tive students and their parents—and generate leads. We

suggested a solution that uses inexpensive CAT5 cable.

The solution:

Our experts traveled with the university’s admissions

reps and multimedia technicians to the convention center

where the fair was held. There, they set up a BLACK BOX

CAT5 Multi VGA System that enabled the booth’s server

to broadcast video plus serial data to multiple plasma

monitors (see the diagram below).

The plasma monitors surrounded the booth, so no matter

where high school students and their parents walked, the

graphics were sure to attract. Every five minutes, a new

feature about the university was broadcast—from academic

opportunities to scholarships to financial aid to social life—

and nearly everyone who attended the college fair tuned

in at one time or another to see what the university

was all about.

By the end of the weekend college fair, the university’s

booth generated more traffic than its competitors—and its

admissions staff had added more than 15,000 potential

recruits to its lists.
